It meets every Tuesday during term time, from 2-3 pm in the Fun Club room of Henry Prince School, Mayfield, near Ashbourne. It starts with games and activities and ends with stories and the opportunity to borrow books from the school library. The Wendy Club is named after Wendy Greatrex, who died in 2006. She had two children aged four and two: Oliver and Lucy. They now now attend Henry Prince School where the club is held. Wendy spent much of her time helping to look after children: she ran the Mayfield Parent and Toddler Group, assisted at the Norbury preschool and helped out at Henry Prince. http://www.under-fives.org/playgroup.html :ADVERT:_________________________________________________ Why not promote your services in a local web site dedicated to the under-fives? Find your house is too full after Christmas? Give stuff away. Just upload details of your unwanted items and local people who want them will get in touch for further details before collecting them. Need a children's car seat or a high chair? Put out a "wanted" sign on the website and the chances are that someone in your area has one going spare. You first need to go to the Freecycle website and find your local group. For example, look in the East Midlands and West Midlands areas: http://www.freecycle.org/group/UK/East%20Midlands http://www.freecycle.org/group/UK/West%20Midlands You then need to join the group nearest to where you live. You'll be sent instructions on how to post messages. Use the subject "Offer" when you have something to give away and "Wanted" when you need something. Freecycle uses Yahoo Groups to manage the message sending. The aim of the Freecycle network is to reduce waste and save resources. This week, one group's offers included books, computer keyboards, toasters, folding beds, a wheelbarrow, a television, a Monopoly game, girls clothes aged 3-5 and a dolls house. Whatever you have that you don't want, or want that you don't have, the Freecycle Network can help. See http://www.freecycle.org/ for more details. ___________________________________________________________ Special Offers and Discount Codes --------------------------------- Here are the on-line retailers which this week have made discount codes and special offers available to Under-Fives readers. The highly prescriptive regime for pre-school children, which is due to become law next year, has been introduced by stealth, they say. It will induce needless anxiety and dent children's enthusiasm for learning. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/ Free Books for Nurseries Ed Balls has announced that under a new scheme for 2008, Book Ahead, public libraries will be given up to half a million free books to make up book boxes for local nurseries, as part of a 5 million pound drive to get more under 5s - especially boys - into reading early. http://www.literacytrust.org.uk/ Under-sevens 'too young to learn to read' Children should not start formal learning until they are seven, according to a world expert in nursery education who suggests that teaching reading and writing earlier can put them off for life. http://education.guardian.co.uk/ If you would like to read this news as it happens, without waiting for this newsletter, then grab our newsfeed from http://www.under-fives.org/newsfeed.html It's free and instantly updates you with the latest news and events via e-mail, your web site or any news feed reader. ___________________________________________________________ Copyright studholme.net, 2008 You are welcome to copy or forward any part of this newsletter, but please include this copyright notice and web address - http://www.studholme.net/child/ Previous editions of this newsletter are archived at http://www.studholme.net/child/news.html
