Premature babies fed enriched formula milk in their first weeks consistently outperformed other preterm babies in IQ tests. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7253304.stm Seat inserts keep babies breathing A New Zealand research team found that breathing problems were significantly reduced when young infants were placed in a car safety seat with a foam insert in it, designed to help the infant's head to lie upright in a natural position instead of slumping forward. http://tinyurl.com/2q4uh8 Doubts over reducing class sizes Further reductions in primary school class sizes probably would not be good value for money, research suggests. Cutting class sizes to 20 would cost £20,000 per class per year, money which would be more effective invested in closer monitoring of pupils' progress. However the study says that small class sizes can be beneficial for infant classes - although this would need a drop in numbers down to classes of 15 pupils. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/7262586.stm Motherhood 'affects women's pay' Having children has a direct impact on women's salaries, resulting in them being paid up to 20% less than their male counterparts, the TUC says. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7288901.stm If you would like to read this news as it happens, without waiting for this newsletter, then grab our newsfeed from http://www.under-fives.org/newsfeed.html It's free and instantly updates you with the latest news and events via e-mail, your web site or any news feed reader. ___________________________________________________________ Copyright studholme.net, 2008 You are welcome to copy or forward any part of this newsletter, but please include this copyright notice and web address - http://www.studholme.net/child/ Previous editions of this newsletter are archived at http://www.studholme.net/child/news.html
