Finally, standing in the sea after a train crash surrounded by other people and beasts, his grumpy friend promises to eat some if Sam will promise to stop pestering him. To his surprise he finds he does like green eggs and ham. My daughter and I love this book. With its little words and rhyming text she can join in as I read it. It has also helped encourage her to try new things. When she says "I don't like it" a quote from the book evokes a giggle and a willingness to try. Dr Seuss wrote Green Eggs and Ham in 1960 after being challenged by his editor to produce a book using fewer than fifty different words, most of which have only one syllable. The aim was a fun-to-read book for young readers, but the result is also ideal for non-readers. For ages 2 and upwards. About the Author Born 1904 in Massachusetts, USA; his real name was Theodor Geisel. After graduating from Dartmouth College in 1925 he went to Oxford University. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1984 and three Academy Awards, Dr Seuss wrote and illustrated 44 children's books. He died 24 September 1991. This year's campaign focuses on the importance of support during breastfeeding from those closest to mothers: partners, peers and family members. This national awareness campaign running from 9 - 15 May aims to provide parents, carers and healthcare professionals with potentially life-saving advice. http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/ Bed sharing puts babies at risk Parents who smoke are being urged not to share a bed with their baby after a survey found many did not know this raises the risk of cot death. The Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths found a third of 428 parents polled had shared a bed with a baby. A child whose maternal grandmother smoked while pregnant may have double the risk of developing childhood asthma compared with those with grandmothers who never smoked http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn7252 New Research shows Good effects of small classes A long-term study in the USA suggests children benefit from being taught in small classes over several years. Researchers tracked 5,000 children in Tennessee from kindergarten to when they left high school. They found children who had been in small classes for four years were more likely than others to graduate from high school. Pupils from poorer families benefited most. In January, a British research project concluded there was no evidence that children in smaller primary classes did better in maths or English.
