There are some real bargains to be found there, for new as well as second-hand stuff. Here are some tips to help you buy effectively on eBay. First of all you need to register. Go to http://tinyurl.com/2b7pee and fill in your details. You will need to give your name, address, telephone number and e-mail. You also need to think up a name to use when bidding on eBay, and a password. You don't need to enter any details of your bank account or credit card. Once you have confirmed your registration you can start shopping. A good way to start is to search the "completed listings". These are items which have already been sold. This will give you a good idea of the price range in which to bid. To start this search, click eBay's Advanced Search link and select "Completed listings only". Now you can use the normal search box to find what you want. A list of items will appear. If it says "Buy it Now" then this is not an auction and you can buy the item at the price listed immediately. Otherwise you bid on the item. Bidding Tips ============ 1. Always check the postage costs. These can add considerably to your purchase price so bid accordingly. 2. Check the rating of the seller. In the "Meet the seller" section it will show how many eBay transactions the seller has completed, and the feedback other people have given them. If you click the seller's name you can see the comments people have left about their transaction. Only bid if other people seem happy with their purchases. 3. Decide the price you are prepared to pay, and stick to it. It is very easy to get carried away and keep bidding just a little bit more. 4. When you make a bid, eBay asks you to enter the highest price that you are willing to pay. However, this is not necessarily what the item will cost you. eBay will bid on your behalf just above the next highest bidder. So you may win an item for less than you were prepared to pay. 5. The time and day that you make your bid influences your chances of winning. The closer to the end of the auction you leave it, the more likely you are to win. Place your bid at the last minute and other bidders have only seconds to match it. 6. If you are not bidding straight away then you can choose to "Watch this item in My eBay". When you next click the My eBay link at the top of the page, all the items you've chosen to watch will be listed. What to do when you've Won ========================== Many sellers offer a choice of payment methods. PayPal is the safest. This is an online service which provides a link between you and the seller. The Paypal website knows your credit or debit card details, but these are not revealed to the seller. And Paypal offers a free buyer protection scheme. To set up a PayPal account go to http://www.paypal.co.uk/. Most sellers will also accept cheques or postal orders. Never send cash. Problems ======== I've only have one problem when buying on eBay, and this was quickly resolved with a full refund. However, if what you've purchased doesn't arrive, or was not what was described, then... 1. Contact the seller directly. Sellers are very protective of their positive eBay ratings and are generally happy to help resolve your complaint. 2. If this gets you nowhere and you paid by PayPal you may be able to make a claim. Look on the right hand side of the listing page, in the Buy Safely section, if the item is covered by the PayPal Buyer Protection scheme. (Almost all items costing less than £500 are covered.) 3. Your third option is to contact eBay via the Help section and ask for help. 4. Finally you can leave negative feedback to warn other buyers.
