Tucking into chocolate is good for the baby, according to a study of over 300 women. The babies born to women who had been eating chocolate daily during pregnancy were more active and "positively reactive" - a measure that encompasses traits such as smiling and laughter http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99994854 Pre-School is Good for Children New research has concluded that children who have good nursery or other pre-school education, after the age of 3, do better at primary school than those kept at home. However, children attending nursery full time from being babies were more prome to anti-social behaviour. http://www.ioe.ac.uk/cdl/eppe/pdfs/eppe_brief2503.pdf Parents to get Help Paying Nannies For the first time, thousands of parents will be able to get financial support to help pay for nannies from April 2005, Children’s Minister Margaret Hodge announced this week at the annual Sure Start Conference. http://www.dfes.gov.uk/pns/DisplayPN.cgi?pn_id=2004_0213 Stress can make pregnant women miscarry Stress really can cause miscarriages, a series of studies suggests. The good news is that extra doses of progesterone might safeguard the pregnancies of women at risk. While the cause of most miscarriages is never established, doctors usually attribute them either to abnormalities in the fetus or to illness or health problems in the mother. Most obstetricians dismiss the idea that healthy women can lose healthy babies solely because of stress. But a series of studies by a team in Germany suggests otherwise. http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99996644 ___________________________________________________________ Copyright studholme.net, 2004 You are welcome to copy or forward any part of this newsletter, but please include this copyright notice and web address - http://www.studholme.net/child/ Previous editions of this newsletter are archived at http://www.studholme.net/child/news.html
